Standards of Education

Standards for the 21st-Century skills Education offers a vision for teaching and learning to both guide and beckon our profession as education leaders. They will both shape the library program and serve as a tool for school librarians to use to shape the learning of students in the school.

Teaching for Learning

Candidates are effective teachers who demonstrate knowledge of learners and learning and who model and promote collaborative planning, instruction in multiple literacies, and inquiry-based learning, enabling members of the learning community to become effective users of ideas and information. Candidates design and implement instruction that engages students’ interests and develops their ability to inquire, think critically, gain and share knowledge.

Library instructors need to be effective teachers of information learning skills, reading and library resources. Co-teaching and team teaching is the hallmark of the library media specialist.  While collaborative efforts by the librarian support all curricular areas, it is important that the librarian has a firm grasp of the academic standards in their building.  This allows the librarian to support the classroom teachers in all academic areas of the school.
Developing effective lessons that encourage independent thinking that meet the diverse needs of the student population are essential. These lessons should engage students develop higher order thinking skills. Lesson plans should also support the 21st Century Learning standards to provide students the ability to develop these essential skills necessary for the real world.

Literacy and Reading

Candidates promote reading for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. Candidates are aware of major trends in children’s and young adult literature and selecting reading materials in multiple formats to support reading for information, reading for pleasure, and reading for lifelong learning. Candidates use a variety of strategies to reinforce classroom reading instruction to address the diverse needs and interests of all readers.

Encouraging the love of reading should be the foundation of an effective library media program, supported and modeled by the Library Media Specialist. Librarians must poses the ability to facilitate the love of reading. Promoting reading enhances the library experience for students. Effective reading skills and strategies improve students ability to be effective users of information.  Reading is a life-long skill that needs to be promoted, enhanced and facilitated. Students reading skills are paramount their academic success.

Information and Knowledge

Candidates model and promote ethical, equitable access to and use of physical, digital, and virtual collections of resources. Candidates demonstrate knowledge of a variety of information sources and services that support the needs of the diverse learning community. Candidates demonstrate the use of a variety of research strategies to generate knowledge to improve practice.

Librarians service diverse population that have varies needs and abilities, they need to be able to provide strategies that enable the user to effectively gather and utilize information.  These strategies help promote the necessary skills that make students effective users of information, which is a life-long skill necessary for productive adults.

Advocacy and Leadership

Candidates advocate for dynamic school library programs and positive learning environments that focus on student learning and achievement by collaborating and connecting with teachers, administrators, librarians, and the community. Candidates are committed to continuous learning and professional growth and lead professional development activities for other educators. Candidates provide leadership by articulating how school libraries contribute to student achievement.

Advocating for students and libraries should be a paramount to the librarian media specialist. Making sure that libraries are able to provide materials and services to their cliental is important, especially in this era of reduced funding and school cut-backs. Advocating for your students and promoting libraries is essential to in the current climate. Advocating the benefits of library services allows equitable access to information for all users.

Program Management and Administration

Candidates plan, develop, implement, and evaluate school library media programs, resources and services in support of the mission of the library program within the school according to the ethics and principles of library science, education, management, and administration.

An essential element of an effective library program stems from administration of that program. The librarian needs to develop and effective plan of action for library instruction and library services. Library management will promote the schools philosophy, mission and vision.  implementation of this plan needs to consist of a curriculum that supports the schools educational goals and provides equitable access to all students, teachers and community members.
Effective library management creates an atmosphere that promotes individual student success in academics and personal endeavors. Librarians are aware that this effective management plan enhances users access to materials and information. Ethical behaviors are supported by proper instruction and modeling.
Curricular development is essential to support the school districts academic goals as well as provide the necessary skills that will enable students to become effective users of information. Library programs will  support Pennsylvania’s academic standards by grade level. Academic standards are utilized in developing library curriculum and instruction, as well as collaborative instruction within the school.
