Our teachers and administration thank you for your positivity, patience, and perseverance as we’ve worked to tackle not only the absence from our students, but our preparation for advancing learning at Donald E. Schick Elementary. For this process to be successful, we need to continue to function as a supportive and flexible community. It has been amazing to see the interactions between staff and students during this challenging time. These relationships will surely set the tone moving forward. Thank you all!
Please remember, this is still new and uncharted waters for all of us. You’ve served in the role of parent/teacher/principal/counselor, and we have done our best to support along with you during this difficult process. As we take the reins of content delivery, we ask for your continued support, flexibility, and patience. We will have bumps in the road, and we will adjust as needed along the way.
We’d like to try and provide clarity and answer a few questions as we move forward:
HOW WILL WE GET THE DISTRICT-PROVIDED CHROMEBOOKS?
To date, Grades 4 and 5 have resumed instruction via one-to-one iPads, and are doing well. Grades K-3 will shortly begin use of Chromebooks beginning next week. We will be distributing the Chromebook as follows:
Pickup will occur at the High School Main Entrance
Monday: 9:00-10:00 Kindergarten
10:30-11:30 First Grade
12:00-1:00 Second Grade
1:30- 2:30 Third Grade
4:30-6:30 Late Pickup (for those unable to pick up during school hours)
Wednesday: 11:30-12:30 Second Chance (for those unable to pick up Monday)
*Any remaining Chromebooks designated for students – a district representative will reach out to assist with distribution.
It is important to remember, that like district iPads, these remain district property, and have care specifications, and will be returned at a later date.
IF WE HAVE DEVICES ALREADY, DO WE NEED THE CHROMEBOOK?
In order for us to successfully implement this instructional tool, we are asking that all students, K-3 pick up a Chromebook. These tools have graciously been provided with the full support of our School Board of Directors and the Superintendent. Use of a district-provided device, like an iPad or Chromebook will allow us to provide technical support, specific applications, and consistent delivery of content. Information on the use, and technical support for the Chromebooks will be provided at pick-up.
WHAT DO I DO IF INTERNET ACCESS IS NOT AN OPTION?
While internet connectivity is ideal and is required for the use of many of the Chromebook applications, we will work with families to provide content as necessary.
Internet access is widely available in many public areas in our district, at local food establishments, etc. which are not always the most ideal or most accessible learning environments for students but remain an option. Additionally, Comcast is offering assistance if eligible. If connectivity is an issue, please reach out to your child’s teacher, counselor, or administrator for support.
WHAT WILL A DAILY/WEEKLY SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
Your grade level teachers have been, or are communicating instructional schedules, etc. with you through their primary communication applications. Our teaching staff has spent a lot of time crafting a schedule and creating content that is manageable and appropriate for grade-level students. If you are finding difficulty during this time, please maintain communication with your child’s teacher.
If you have not yet made contact with your student’s teacher, please do so by next week.
ARE STUDENTS BEING GRADED?
At this time, student progress will be assessed, monitored and recorded, however per the direction of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, no student will be held back. Additionally, we will continue to use this progress monitoring to provide interventions if necessary. Please direct progress concerns to your child’s teacher and/or school counselor.
As a school community, we continue to thank you for your overwhelming support as we’ve worked to make sense of the current environment and move forward in spite of it. You are our SCHICK HEROES!
We are prepared to continue to take the next steps with you, and will stay committed to always “being our best.”
Stay safe, stay healthy, keep trusting and trying, and remember: “It All Starts Here.”
Moving forward together,
Matt Johnson Preston Shellenberger
Principal, K-2 Principal, 3-5
