Welcome to the Donald E. Schick Elementary Library! We encourage students to explore resources to promote their curiosity, desire for information and enjoyment of literature
Our library media center houses a collection of approximately 30,000 volumes and we circulate approximately 15,000 books per school year. Our elementary school services students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Each class per grade level has library scheduled once per six day cycle , which consists of a directed library lesson, weekly book selection and check out. Fourteen computer terminals are located in the library for access to the automated card catalog system, word processing, internet, and preloaded software.
The library staff is eager to help with all of your research, materials and pleasure reading needs. Please feel free to ask Mrs. Cozza or Mrs. Clark for assistance at any time. We will work hard to provide for your resource needs.
The library media center reflects the philosophy of the Loyalsock Township School District, in that, each student will be valued for his or her unique contributions to the school. Each student will be offered equal opportunities within the library media center in accordance with their interest, abilities and needs.
Library services will be provided in a safe, secure environment that nurturers young minds and bodies, by offering students developmentally appropriate digital and print resources and activities that meet student’s individual academic and personal needs.
Community outreach is also an important component to the school library program. The library will continue to support programs that encourage school and community involvement, such as, Read Across America, RIF and family reading opportunities.
The library media center will be recognized as the center of academic activity within the school. The Library Media Center supports the district’s curricular objectives by building collaborative relationships with classroom teachers. The librarian will be the instructional companion for teachers by providing leadership and expertise in assessing resources and information. This collaboration allows for teachers and the librarian to implement effective activities to achieve the district’s academic goals.
Provide a safe and secure environment for students which will promote the love of reading and information through independent activities and collaborative lessons that utilize print and digital media. Implementation of this mission is provided by:
- Supplying print and digital resources that support diverse perspectives
- Collaboration with faculty, staff and administration
- Prepared lessons that foster appreciation of information and literature
- An environment in which growth is encouraged
- Allowing for unique and individual differences
- Extending public outreach (summer programs, family programs)
The Library Media Center will serve as the focal point for information, technology and literature for students, teachers, parents and administrators. The Library Media Center will provide students with the necessary skills and resources to become self-directed and responsible citizens who effectively utilize information to become life-long learners and to appreciate the love of reading.
