Parent’s Information

Literacy

StoryTown is the literacy series we use here at Schick. Here are the areas we focus on:

  • letters and letter sounds
  • syllables and words
  • rhyming
  • segmenting word
  • building and blending words
  • high frequency words
  • read alouds (both fiction and nonfiction)
  • robust vocabulary words
  • story elements (character, setting, problem, solution, etc.)
  • various forms of writing (labels, lists, sentences, stories, etc.)

High Frequency Words

About every three weeks, you will receive a set of high frequency word cards. These are also known as sight words. Students should practice these words at home. The link above will give our list of 54 high frequency words. They should be able to read all 54 words by the end of the year. The words are posted in our classroom so that children may also spell the words correctly in their writing. Click on the following link for your child to play a matching sight word game on Starfall! http://www.starfall.com/n/matching/sight-words/load.htm

Everyday Math

We use the Everyday Math program to teach mathematics. We focus on the basics and providing a foundation for learning math in the future. You will be given a list of the standards we want each student to meet every 9 weeks. Here are some of the topics we cover:

  • Counting (by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s)
  • Reading and writing numerals
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Patterns
  • Graphing
  • Sorting and classifying
  • Measurement
  • Shapes(2D: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle; and 3D shapes)

Science and Social Studies globe

We base our science and social studies lessons on the Pennsylvania State Standards for Kindergarten. We aim to provide shared, hands-on experiences for our students.

Writing Workshop

Families:

As we begin to write more independently in Kindergarten, we would like to share how we do “kid writing.”  This way you can practice with your child at home and do the same things we do at school.

We use writing workshop in our classrooms.  It is a type of writing that allows the child to sound out each word and then write the sounds they hear in that word.  We are learning to write stories and books.

We are basically aiming for every child to write words on their own with NO help from adults.  They need to learn how to sound words out and put letters to the sounds they hear.

They may NOT have correct spelling for words—this is OK!!!  We want them to just do their best at sounding out words independently.

Biography
My name is Jaime Karichner, and I grew up in Muncy, PA.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. Throughout my high school years, I spent most of my time dancing at LKW Dance Center. I became a dance teacher at the studio at young age, which inspired me to go to school to become an elementary teacher.
I graduated from Lock Haven University in 2009 with a B.S.Ed in Elementary Education with a Minor in Special Education and a Concentration in Dance.  Before becoming a permanent teacher at Schick Elementary, I had seven long-term substitute placements: kindergarten, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, and six grade. I’m so excited to call Schick my home and be a part of the Loyalsock Community.

READING COMPREHENSION

Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension

Help your child retain what he reads — a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to glean important information from textbooks.

  1. Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads. Plus, he’s not only seeing the words, he’s hearing them, too. You can also take turns reading aloud.
  2. Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren’t too hard. She should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for her to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
  3. Reread to build fluency. To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly – a skill known as fluency. By the end of 2nd grade, for example, your child should be able to read 90 words a minute. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so she’ll become more fluent.
  4. Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling mightily with comprehension, he may need more help with his reading — for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.
  5. Supplement class reading. If your child’s class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will help her make her way through tougher classroom texts.
  6. Talk about what he’s reading. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book. Ask questions before, during, and after a reading session. For example:
Before: “What are you interested in about this book? What doesn’t interest you?”
During: “What’s going on in the book? Is it turning out the way you thought it would? What do you think will happen next?”
After: “Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it? What other books does it remind you of?”
