Reading Sites for the Intermediate and Middle Grades

Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Exercises and Activities

  • Scholastic Reading and Language Arts Content Index -provides a variety of lesson plans, reproducible, and activities in reading and language arts.
  • Power Proofreading -students select their grade level and must proofread selections of text and correct the errors.
  • Online Reading Skills -provides mini-stories with close exercises, speed reading exercises, and other reading passages with activities.
  • CNN Interactive Reading Source– provides current and archived articles for students to read and then answer comprehension, vocabulary and sequence questions.
  • New York Times Learning Network – provides students in grades 3-12 with news summaries, daily news quiz, word of the day, test prep question of the day, daily lesson plans, news snapshot, and more.
  • Sadlier Oxford Phonics Activities – a great wealth of phonics activities for grades K-6.
  • Scholastic Explorers – students read and interact with information about explorers such as Native American cultures, ocean life, endangered environments, and more.
  • Language Arts WebQuests – WebQuests are Internet activities that promote critical thinking in students as they solve real world tasks in an inquiry based learning environment using reading, comprehension and problem solving skills.
  • Book Adventure – a free reading motivation program similar to Accelerated Reader for children in grades K-8. The site allows students to create their own book lists from over 6,000 recommended titles.  The students then take multiple-choice quizzes on the books they’ve read in print and are eligible to earn points and prizes. The students must register to use the site; however, registration is free.

Spelling and Grammar Activities

  • Tall Tales – provides numerous links with information and activities on tall tales
  • Research Starters – allows students to read information to get ideas for starting research on a variety of topics.
  • The First Thanksgiving – reading materials and activities about the first Thanksgiving.
  • Immigration – reading materials and activities about immigration and Ellis Island

Writing Activities

  • Writing Workshop – Scholastic provides interactive lessons for writing on oral history. It provides a mini lesson and information on pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, reviewing, and publishing.
  • Poetry for Kids – provides numerous links with poetry information and activities.
  • Poetry Express – provides tips and techniques and ideas for writing poetry.
  • Young Writers Workshop – students can select a story, print out the graphic and story starter and finish the story on the lined paper.

Student Publishing and Activities

  • Folktale Writers Workshop – students learn from two authors about writing folktales.  The students learn how to write folk tales, brainstorm ideas and can publish their folk tales on the web.
  • Houghton Mifflin Current Events – provides a news article, quiz, word game, and a place for students to share their feelings on news topics

Tools

  • Interactive Venn Diagram – students enter a title and information for the two circles and then can add words and drag them to the appropriate part of the Venn Diagram.  Students can print the Venn Diagram.
  • Stapleless Book – allows students to select several format to create a simple book that can be printed.
  • Interactive Timeline – allows students to create timelines.

Parent Resource Center

The Title I Parent Resource Center at Schick Elementary has a variety of learning resources and activities for parents of Title I eligible students to check out to help you work with your child at home.

Activities available allow students to practice reading skills taught in the classroom. The activities reinforce letter identification, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. All resources include ideas for use and many can be used independently. All games and activities include directions and are fun for the whole family.
