Special Education Services
Supporting Every Learner
At Loyalsock Township School District, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Our Special Education Department partners with families, teachers, and specialists to provide individualized support that helps students reach their full potential.
Services are provided in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Pennsylvania Chapter 14 regulations, ensuring students receive a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.
Students We Serve
Special education services may be available for students who qualify under one or more of the following disability categories:
- Autism
- Deaf and Hard of Hearing
- Emotional Disturbance
- Hearing Impairment (including Deafness)
- Intellectual Disability
- Multiple Disabilities
- Orthopedic Impairment
- Other Health Impairment
- Specific Learning Disability
- Speech or Language Impairment
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Visual Impairment (including Blindness)
How the Process Works
If a student is identified as needing specially designed instruction (SDI), a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) conducts a comprehensive evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services.
If a student qualifies, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team — which includes parents or guardians — develops a personalized educational plan designed to meet the student’s unique needs and goals.
To ensure each student’s plan continues to meet their needs:
- IEPs are reviewed and updated at least annually.
- Comprehensive reevaluations are conducted every three years (or every two years for students with an intellectual disability), as required by Pennsylvania regulations.
Section 504 Services
Some students may have a disability that affects their ability to participate fully in school but do not qualify for special education under IDEA.
These students may be eligible for accommodations through Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Pennsylvania Chapter 15.
A Section 504 Service Agreement may provide reasonable accommodations or modifications that help students access their educational program and school activities.
Partnering With Families
Families are valued members of every student’s educational team. Throughout the evaluation, planning, and review process, parents and guardians are encouraged to ask questions, share insights, and work collaboratively with school staff to support their child’s success.
