National Honor Society

NHSThe National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, National Honor Society serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

National Honor Society (NHS) Membership in National Honor Society is by application only.

Scholarship

• A student must have a 95% cumulative weighted average, with no rounding, to be eligible to receive an NHS application during the Spring of the student’s junior year. This updated percentage (from previous years) is to better align with the High School’s requirement for Distinguished Honor Roll.

Service and Leadership

• Ability to show leadership and service through involvement in multiple school and community activities over their high school years.
• NHS meets mornings before school as needed in Room F-6.
• Non-NHS members can still be involved in NHS activities. For underclassmen it can be a way to show service for future application purposes. Students interested in participating in service projects or who would like further information can speak with Mrs. LaCoe in F-6 or to any current member. Service projects will be posted on the NHS bulletin board in the math hallway.
