Counseling Department

The mission of the Loyalsock Township School District school counseling department is to provide a comprehensive and developmental school counseling program that addresses academic, career and personal/social needs of each student. In partnership with our schools, families and community, the school counselors support and inspire students to reach their fullest potential.

How Do School Counselors Impact Student Achievement?

“The school counselor is an integral system support for the school-family-community relationship that meet the personal/social, academic, and career needs of a large number of students through collaboration, coordination, and consultation with school and community stakeholders.”
–An Examination of School Counselor Involvement in School-Family-
Community Partnerships, J. Bryan, C. Holcomb-McCoy, Professional SchoolCounseling, June 2007.

School counselors help students create an academic plan for their education to prepare for successful careers after graduation and help students develop the necessary skills, such as organizational, time management, and study skills.

  • 4 year plans are developed every year with every 9th grade student
  • We meet with Seniors several times during the year to discuss progress in post-secondary planning.
  • We provide information and preparation strategies for the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), and Advanced Placement exams.

School Counselors assist students in career awareness, exploration and planning in order to prepare them for success in post-secondary education and a rapidly changing workplace.

  • The career exploration students completed in 8th grade is built upon in 9th-12th grades.
  • Every year a Career Expo is hosted at LTHS for all students to learn more about areas of interest.
  • A job shadowing experience is required for all Juniors.
  • Students will leave high school with a formal resume.
  • Interviewing skills are taught to prepare students for employment.
  • All students will complete a mock interview using the interviewing skills they learned.

Social/ Personal

School Counselors offer conflict resolution strategies and individual counseling opportunities as the need arises.

  • Peer relationships and social skills
  • Separation/divorce situations
  • Transfer students who are having difficulty adjusting
  • Illness or death within the family
  • Difficulty with peer relationships
  • Extended absence of a parent or loved one
  • Coping strategies
  • Communication/ Problem solving
  • Includes goal-setting and decision making
  • Transition planning
  • Leadership development
  • Both counselors are members of the school’s HEART team (Helping Effort for At-Risk Teens), which works to identify, intervene with, and refer students who are at-risk for drug, alcohol, and/or mental health issues.

Consultation and Collaboration

School counselors address the academic and developmental needs of all students, not just those in need, by collaborating with students, parents, school staff and the community.

My career in education began in 1993 upon my graduation from the Pennsylvania State University. (Go Lions!) I lived and worked in Dover, DE for the next 12 years while my husband served in the Air Force. During my time in Delaware, I spent two years working with first graders and then made the move to teaching Kindergarten.

I joined the Loyalsock family in January of 2006 once my husband and I moved back to central Pennsylvania to be closer to our families. I was again teaching kindergarten and during this time we adopted our beautiful daughters Emma and Hannah.

In all I taught for 17 happy years before making an exciting professional change to be the second school counselor in our building.   It has now been 6 years that I have worked in my ‘new’ capacity and I continue to feel honored by the gift of working with our students.   We are a school family that truly cares about and values each member of our team.
