Welcome to Mrs. Brown’s 4th Grade Class!
My name is Kelly Brown and I have been teaching at Schick Elementary for 5 years. Most of that time was spent in 5th grade. I look forward to a new adventure in 4th grade this year. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Lycoming College and I am currently working on my Master’s Degree at Lock Haven University. When I am not working on activities and plans for school, I spend all my spare time playing with and chasing around my children, Miles (6) and Norah (3). My husband, Eric, is also a teacher. He teaches Physics, Math, and STEM at Montgomery Area School District. Some of my most important qualities are being patient, caring, kind, adventurous, and hard-working. I strive to give my students the best education they can possibly have and work hard to get each of them actively engaged in the learning process. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, biking, kayaking, playing games, and trying new things.

Hi! I’m Mrs. Comfort. Here are some facts about me: For the past few years I have been a 4th grade teacher. This year I am excited to be in 2nd grade! I am a Loyalsock graduate myself! I have always wanted to be a teacher and I went to college at Susquehanna University to learn how to be a great teacher. This is my 7th year teaching at Loyalsock. I LOVE to read and share my passion for reading with the kiddos!! Harry Potter is one of my favorite books. I’ve even been to Platform 9 3/4! I love to travel and see the world! I have been to 16 different countries around the world with People to People Student Ambassador Program. And, if you can’t already tell, my favorite color is PINK! I am very excited to teach 2nd grade and I am looking forward to a fantastic year!!

I have taught art in Florida for thirteen years. I believe that Art is the first language of children and that through Art children can express themselves, explore, create, and problem solve. Art is a natural extension of the world around them and children have a natural curiosity about art. In my art classes, even the youngest children will learn about the world around through art. They will learn about the elements of design including color, texture, line, shape, form, value, and space. They will also learn about the principles of design which include: contrast, balance, unity movement, pattern, emphasis, and rhythm. Math, science, and social studies will be integrated into their lesson so that your child will understand that everything they learn about is connected to other things. I look forward to studying the world of art with your child.

About Me:
I am a Pittsburgh native who has 13 years of experience in Art Education. I have worked in all areas in Art for the Palm Beach County School system, but I am very happy to be working at the elementary level again, which is my favorite place to teach. I had gotten my B.A. in Art at California University of Pennsylvania, and received masters degree in Multicultural Education from Florida Atlantic University. During my time teaching in Florida, I had taught Art at an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program in West Palm Beach.
I enjoy swimming, biking, painting, ceramics, reading and watching Steeler games with my family.

Welcome Information
Welcome to 3rd Grade! Third grade is such an exciting year in your child’s education, and I am thrilled to be a part of it! J I look forward to getting to work with you and your child as the year progresses. I have outlined a few important things that may answer some of the questions you have.
Homework
I will be giving homework Monday-Thursday. Students will write their homework assignments in their agendas each morning, and they will bring their homework home in their homework folders. Please sign your child’s agenda every night to indicate that you have seen the assignments. Because homework is for practicing and reinforcing skills, I do not expect every homework assignment to be perfect! I do, however, expect the students to apply their best efforts. J
Behavior Management
I will be using Class Dojo to track student behaviors throughout the school year. This is a wonderful app that allows me to track behaviors, both positive and negative, quickly and easily throughout the day. “Dojo Points” will be awarded and students will be able to cash in on their points for various rewards at the end of the week. Parents/Guardians also have the ability to monitor their child’s behaviors. Please be on the lookout for the information on how to access this awesome feature!
We will also be building “Compliment Chains!” Each time that the class receives a compliment, I will add a paperclip to the chain. (For example: Another teacher compliments us on how quietly we walk in the hallway.) When the chain reaches a certain length, I will treat the students to a special celebration, art project, or chunk of “student choice” time.
Recess
We have recess every day after lunch. Please keep an eye on the weather and make sure your child is dressed appropriately! Jackets are mandatory during cold temperatures.
Snack
This year we have a later lunch (12:15). I allow the kids to eat a mid-morning snack while they complete their independent work. If you would like to send a snack for your child, please send something that he/she can keep in their desk until snack time. (Please do not send candy or chewing gum!) I usually try to have some extra snacks in the classroom in case someone forgets a snack, but I do rely on donations to keep these “extras” on hand. J
Student Absences
When your child is absent, please call the absentee line to report your child’s absence. Then please follow-up with a written excuse including the date and the reason for the absence.

Do I Need to Buy Supplies
Most of the supplies we will need for Third Grade have been delivered to our classroom.
We have everything from crayons to notebooks, and art supplies to dry erase markers.
Back to school shopping can be so much fun, but please keep these ideas in mind when browsing all those goodies.
Mechanical pencils create lots of problems in our classroom. Please keep them at home to complete homework assignments.
Our desks are not big enough to accommodate extra binders, folders, trapper-keepers, and notebooks. Kiddos won’t need them.
Parents only need to provide their child with a backpack, clean washcloth or sock, and a healthy snack for each day.
Hello! My name is Mrs. Jennifer Ellis. I graduated from Lycoming College in 1997 with a degree in Accounting and certification in Elementary Education. This is my 18th year of teaching in the Loyalsock Township School District. I taught fourth grade for 2 years, fifth grade math/science for 13 years, and this is my third year as a self-contained fifth grade teacher.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I have five children. Jaime, who is 13, and Jackson, who is 11, both attend Loyalsockl Middle School. Julie, who is 8, and Joey, who is 5, attend Schick Elementary. Finally, Jocelyn is 2 1/2 and goes to preschool.
I love the beach and doing anything outside. I spend most of my weekends and evenings watching my kids play soccer or basketball. I can’t wait to learn about your hobbies and interests!

Philosophy
A quality Physical Education program does not just happen. It takes a well-planned curriculum, advanced preparation, and classroom management strategies. When these areas are achieved, the program consists of fun, vigorous activity, with little standing around.
At Schick Elementary, we work hard and play hard to achieve a quality Physical Education program that develops a child’s strength, flexibility, and endurance; teaches athletic skills; and promotes a lifetime love of exercise and sports.
Class Participation and Dress Code
All students are expected to participate in regularly scheduled PE classes. If your child cannont participate in classs, please provide medical documentation or a parent note.
Students should wear sneakers during physical education classes. This type of footwear provides the child with some built-in safety features. Please do no allow your child to wear crocs, flip flops, sandals, high-heeled shoes, or boots.
Students should wear comfortable pants or shorts.
Students should not wear dangling or hoop earrings, long necklaces, or loose bracelets. Long hair should be pulled back in a ponytail.

About me
I am a full-day kindergarten teacher at Donald E. Schick Elementary School in the Loyalsock Township School District, Williamsport, PA. I have been teaching kindergarten for 21 years. I received my B.S. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Penn State University and my M.S. in Education at Wilkes University. I live in Rose Valley and I have three children–Natalie, age 17, Owen, age 16, and Jace, age 11. I like to work out, attend my kids’ sporting events, and spend time with friends and family. I love Penn State, go Nittany Lions!, the color red, and dark chocolate! Yum, yum!
Kindergarten Report Card: Our kindergarten report card is sent home in November, March, and June. We meet with parents for a parent/teacher conference in November and March.
Language Arts: We use the Storytown Reading Series published by Houghton Mifflin. This is a comprehensive program that includes oral language, phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and writing components. We support this with Writing Workshop, Fundations, and guided reading.
Kidwriting: We use our own variation of the Kid Writing program by Eileen Feldgus. This is a program in which we encourage children to use their sounds and stretch out words that they hear. We do not expect it to be correct. We call that “Adult Writing,” which we write under their writing. Everyday Math: We use the Everyday Mathematics 4 curriculum from the University of Chicago. It offers a spiral curriculum which allows the children to practice each skill many times in order to master it.
Social Studies & Science: We use hands-on, investigative, and inquiry-based curriculum for these subjects. In social studies, we will be learning how to be good citizens, expanding our knowledge of history and holidays, and exploring the world around us through various units during the school year. We utilize the Fusion Science curriculum which provides an interactive textbook, as well as, hands on activities and technology based learning.

I attended and graduated from Montoursville school district (K-12).
I have an Associate of Arts Degree in General Studies/Education from Penn College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Lock Haven University and a Master’s Degree from Wilkes University in Educational Strategies and Development.
I’ve been with Loyalsock Township School District for 17 and a half years.
During the winter months I am a PSIA Ski Instructor and love downhill skiing. During the summer months I enjoy boating in the West Branch Susquehanna River, traveling, and riding motorcycles with my family.

Welcome to my Kindergarten website! This is my thirteenth year here at Schick and I truly love every minute of teaching young children. Our days are filled with learning and hard work as the students blossom into readers, writers, and thinkers.
Our reading curriculum is jam packed with rich literacy experiences. We use the Harcourt, Story Town series in conjunction with Guided Reading and Fundations Phonics. The use of these programs helps us to provide effective reading instruction at each student’s developmental level. We also use the a school wide reading program to build a love of reading in our students through successful independent reading.
Writing is a big step in Kindergarten. During the year we work on students mastering writing a story. Students will learn to write and tell a story across three or more pages.
Through the use of Everyday Mathematics our Kindergarteners are exposed to many hands on math experiences. Everyday Mathematics uses a spiral curriculum that ensures students are frequently reviewing and practicing skills. The program uses activities and games to create a fun filled learning environment.
Throughout the year we will use Fusion Science. Each student has a workbook with lessons pages they can write one. Students will bring home these colorful lesson pages to share with you after we complete each lesson. Many experiments and online activities add to the fun and excitement of Science. Your child is sure to love it!

Hi! My name is Rebecca Kuntz (Becky) and I am your child’s kindergarten teacher. I live in Loyalsock with my my daughter, Emily. Emily is a Freshman at D’Youville College this year. StoryTown is the literacy series we use here at Schick. Here are the areas we focus on:
High Frequency Words
About every three weeks, you will receive a set of high frequency word cards. These are also known as sight words. Students should practice these words at home. The link above will give our list of 54 high frequency words. They should be able to read all 54 words by the end of the year. The words are posted in our classroom so that children may also spell the words correctly in their writing. Everyday Math
We use the Everyday Math program to teach mathematics. We focus on the basics and providing a foundation for learning math in the future. You will be given a list of the standards we want each student to meet every 9 weeks. Here are some of the topics we cover:

We base our science and social studies lessons on the Pennsylvania State Standards for Kindergarten. We aim to provide shared, hands-on experiences for our students.
Writing Workshop
Families:
As we begin to write more independently in Kindergarten, we would like to share how we do “kid writing.” This way you can practice with your child at home and do the same things we do at school.
We use writing workshop in our classrooms. It is a type of writing that allows the child to sound out each word and then write the sounds they hear in that word. We are learning to write stories and books.
We are basically aiming for every child to write words on their own with NO help from adults. They need to learn how to sound words out and put letters to the sounds they hear.
They may NOT have correct spelling for words—this is OK!!! We want them to just do their best at sounding out words independently.
