Biography
My name is Jaime Karichner, and I grew up in Muncy, PA.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. Throughout my high school years, I spent most of my time dancing at LKW Dance Center. I became a dance teacher at the studio at young age, which inspired me to go to school to become an elementary teacher.
I graduated from Lock Haven University in 2009 with a B.S.Ed in Elementary Education with a Minor in Special Education and a Concentration in Dance.  Before becoming a permanent teacher at Schick Elementary, I had seven long-term substitute placements: kindergarten, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, and six grade. I’m so excited to call Schick my home and be a part of the Loyalsock Community.

READING COMPREHENSION

Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension

Help your child retain what he reads — a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to glean important information from textbooks.

  1. Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads. Plus, he’s not only seeing the words, he’s hearing them, too. You can also take turns reading aloud.
  2. Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren’t too hard. She should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for her to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
  3. Reread to build fluency. To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly – a skill known as fluency. By the end of 2nd grade, for example, your child should be able to read 90 words a minute. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so she’ll become more fluent.
  4. Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling mightily with comprehension, he may need more help with his reading — for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.
  5. Supplement class reading. If your child’s class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will help her make her way through tougher classroom texts.
  6. Talk about what he’s reading. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book. Ask questions before, during, and after a reading session. For example:
Before: “What are you interested in about this book? What doesn’t interest you?”
During: “What’s going on in the book? Is it turning out the way you thought it would? What do you think will happen next?”
After: “Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it? What other books does it remind you of?”

Classroom Management

I will switch back and forth between the two management systems mentioned below, depending on what is effectively working or not working. Should you ever have any questions, please let me know immediately.

Class Dojo

This year, I will be using a management tool called ClassDojo. ClassDojo is a web based program which allows teachers to track students’ behaviors (positive AND negative) easily and efficiently. The program is based on points, and students can be given positive points for things like being on task, being respectful, participating, or working hard. On the other hand, points can be taken away if students are off task, talking out, or unprepared.! J

After students have been added to the system, there is a student access code we will give to each student so that they can log on to the website. On the site, they are able to see how many points they have, which positive behaviors were noted, and which negative behaviors they need to work on. Students will be able to earn rewards based on their points.

One of the greatest features of ClassDojo is that it allows me to send parents a “behavior and skills report” every Friday by e-mail.  All you need to do is use the parent access code to get signed up. My hope is that this will help you better understand the progress of your student’s behavior on a week-to-week basis.

For more details, please see the letter that will be sent home!

Clip it! Behavior Chart

On of the behavior management tools we will use in our classroom this year will be a clip chart to monitor behavior.  A clip chart is a great tool that allows students to be rewarded for positive behavior, while discouraging negative behavior.

Each student has a clothespin, or clip, with his or her name on it.  Everyone will start out at the top of the chart at the beginning of each day, and clips can move up and down throughout the day based on behavior. Students will earn tickets based on the level they end the day with!  The tickets will be put into a drawing at the end of the week to earn special rewards.

Your child will keep track of his/her own daily behavior on a calendar that will be placed in the back pocket of the homework folder. Please sign this each week so you are aware and so there are no surprises at anytime throughout the year.

Biography

Hello all! I am beyond excited to be your fourth grade teacher this year. We are in for a lot of changes and growing together as we make our way through this new schoolyear. Rest assured though that we will have a blast learning and developing together this year! 🙂

I am a Muncy High School graduate (2004) and a Bloomsburg University Graduate (2008) with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary/Early Childhood Education. I currently live in Montgomery with my fiance, Matthew and my beautiful two year old daughter, Jocelyn. Matthew and I will be getting married this December. I can’t wait until I come back to school and confuse you all with my name change. My new name will be Mrs. Nagele. Trust me, it will take awhile for us ALL to get used to it. We have two four-legged fur babies named Titus and Mocha. Titus is our cat who absolutely LOVES to cuddle and sleep in sinks. Mocha is our chocolate lab who is insanely spoiled!

Classroom Rules

  1. Always do your best!
  2. Listen when someone is speaking.
  3. Follow directions
  4. Keep to your own space and respect other’s property.
  5. Raise your hand and ask to get out of your seat.

Students are to follow these classroom rules at all times.

They are also expected to follow the LANCER CODE:

  • Be respectful
  • Be responsible
  • Be safe
  • Always be my best

O.W.L. (Organized While Learning)

In our classroom, I am always urging the students to be Organized.  To help us with this task, I have asked you to supply TWO one inch binders.  One of those binders will be used as an O.W.L binder. This keeps them Organized While Learning.  In their O.W.L. binder, they will house the following items:

  • PSSA Bellringers
  • DLR
  • any other bellringers
  • Classwork Folder (all things that we are currently working on are kept in this folder)
  • Centers Folder
  • Math Fact Rockets

This binder will remain at school for the children to access daily.

Donald E. Schick Elementary SchoolExt. 1125Work Phone: (570) 326-3554
Biography

First of all, I love working here at Schick Elementary! I am fortunate to have fabulous students, supportive families, and dedicated coworkers.

Ever since I was in Kindergarten, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I even asked for a chalkboard for Christmas that year! 🙂 I earned my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education with minors in Reading Education and Special Education from Lock Haven University in 2006, and I recently completed my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Penn State University in 2015.

Some of my favorite hobbies include reading, making crafts, and traveling. I also like to take pictures, play ball with my dog (Ozzie), and spend time with my amazing friends and family.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns and feedback. I look forward to hearing from you!

Classroom Rules & Procedures

In our classroom and our whole school, we strive to be LANCERS! 🙂

“We could learn a lot from crayons!”

Some are sharp, some are pretty,
and some are dull.
Some have weird names,
and they are all different colors…

but they have all learned
to live in the same box.

Homework Information

Homework is a valuable instructional tool!  🙂

  • Homework reinforces skills and concepts taught in class.
  • Homework ndicates areas of instruction that need to be retaught or revisited.
  • Homework allows family members to observe what their student is learning in school, and interact in the learning process.

Most nights, students will have two (2) homework assignments.  Students will record their homework each morning in their agendas.  This indicates that students are taking responsibility for their assignments, and the agenda serves as a communication tool between home and school.

I do not grade students’ homework with a percentage grade because I do not expect students to achieve perfection every night—after all, homework is for practice and reinforcement!

Instead, I grade students on a simple 2 point scale. I am looking for evidence of the skill being assessed, the student’s ability to read and follow directions, and the student’s “bestest” effort.

2 points
  • Homework is completed with what appears to be the student’s “best” effort.
    • e.g. student has checked his/her work, written neatly, put his/her name on the paper, and followed directions.
  • Homework is turned in on time.
1 point
  • Homework is partially completed.
  • Homework does not evidence the student’s “best effort”.
    • e.g. the student’s handwriting is difficult to decipher, the student did not follow directions, or the student obviously did not check his/her work before turning it in.
    • Homework is late.
0 points
  • Student fails to turn in the homework assignment.
  • Student does not get the late homework to me by Friday of that week.

Biography

My name is Jackie Puckey and I was born and raised across the river in South Williamsport. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to teach young children. Throughout my teen and young adult years, I spent most of my time babysitting and working at the South Side Pool, where I spent my summers coaching the South Williamsport Summer Swim Team, teaching swim lessons, and working as a lifeguard and eventually Pool Manager. All this experience working with and being around children only helped me realize what I wanted to spend my life doing… teaching and inspiring children and helping them find success.

I graduated from Clarion University in 2006 with a B.S.Ed in Early Childhood Education and received my Masters of Arts in Education from George Mason University in 2012.  I worked as a day-to-day substitute teacher in several local schools from June 2006-June 2007 until I moved to Northern Virginia, where I taught Kindergarten for the Prince William County School District from August 2007-June 2013.  I moved back to the area during the summer of 2013 where I was lucky enough to be hired here in Loyalsock.  I am so excited to be in my sixth year teaching first grade at Schick Elementary!

My husband Jason and I just celebrated seven years of marriage and have a beautiful daughter, Cecilia, who was born October 4, 2017.

Our Classroom Rules

We created the following classroom rules together during our first few days of school.   I believe children take more ownership and are more likely to follow rules they help create.  I also believe that we are partners in learning and try my best to create a community of learners in my classroom, therefore if students have rules to follow, I should also have rules to follow. Please partner with us by talking with your child every day about how their day went, what they did well, and what they can work on improving!  Thanks for your help with this!

Biography

Welcome! While this is my eleventh year teaching first grade at Schick Elementary, I have been teaching elementary age students for 23 years. Prior to Loyalsock, I had the pleasure of teaching second grade in the East Lycoming School District and the Pocono Mountain School District. I have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Bloomsburg University and a master’s degree in education from East Stroudsburg University. My family and I also have lived in Loyalsock for the past 18 years. It is truly a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with children every day! I look forward to greeting the many new faces to my classroom this year and working the families of previous students! Best wishes for a fantastic 2015-2016 school year!
